Revengers, Assemble – Dexter is Back!

Buckle in your Dark Passenger – purpose-driven serial killer Dexter is back with origin story Dexter: Original Sin on M-Net and Showmax from 29 July at 9pm. Set in Miami in 1991, the prequel series takes place 15 years before the events of the first season of the original series and takes a deeper look at how it all began, focusing on 20-year-old university graduate-turned police department forensics intern Dexter Morgan (Patrick Gibson) as he commits his first kill.
Christian Slater shines as Detective Harry Morgan, Dexter’s father, who guides the young man as his bloodthirsty urges grow to the point where they can no longer be ignored in the form of his ‘Dark Passenger’. Harry teaches Dexter a code that will shape the rest of his crimes – one designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to die – while avoiding getting caught by the law enforcement agency he serves.
Sarah Michelle Gellar plays a recurring role as Dexter’s boss Tanya Martin, the chief of forensics of the homicide division at Miami Metro Police Department and Patrick Dempsey is Aaron Spencer, the captain of the homicide division at Miami Metro Police Department. Morgan’s inner monologue is voiced by returning Dexter star Michael C. Hall and the rest of the cast puts fresh faces to the younger versions of familiar characters in the form of Molly Brown as Dexter’s adoptive younger sister Debra; Christina Millian as the department’s first female homicide detective Maria LaGuerta; James Martinez (detective Angel Batista); Alex Shimizu (forensic analyst Vince Masuka) and Reno Wilson as Bobby Wyatt, Harry’s homicide division partner.
Dexter: Original Sin premiered on Paramount+ and Showtime in America with 2.1M global viewers in the first three days of availability, according to Deadline’s Katie Campione, who writes that Paramount+ claimed the episode as Showtime‘s most-streamed series in a decade. The show’s finale drew 2.68M global viewers on Paramount+ with Showtime, 30% more than the premiere.
The ’Dexterverse’ continues to grow. The original series, set in 1996, premiered in 2006 and was followed by mini-series Dexter: New Blood in 2021, starring original cast Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter as Dexter and ‘Deb’ Morgan, set ten years after the events of the original series finale. Dexter: Original Sin delves into Dexter’s origin story in 1991, with Dexter: Resurrection – which is set after New Blood – currently in production with Hall returning in the starring role alongside Uma Thurman, David Zayas, Jack Alcott, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Kadia Saraf, Dominic Fumusa, Emilia Suárez, with James Remar and Peter Dinklage. If you can figure out the order of the 24 Star Wars films and series, timelining the Dexterverse is easy: Dexter: Original Sin; Dexter; Dexter: New Blood and latterly, Dexter: Resurrection.
Catch Dexter: Original Sin on M-Net on 29 July at 9pm – also on Showmax, DStv Stream and DStv Catch Up. For more, visit the M-Net Website and join the conversation on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and Facebook.
