BELOOFDE LAND

kykNET (DStv Channel 144) | 8PM on Wednesdays since 7 January

Is the United States of America truly the land of hope and opportunity – or simply the next destination for people searching for stability, safety and a sense of belonging?

Emigration to America has long been part of South Africa’s story but the debate reignited globally when US President Donald Trump signed an executive order in early 2025 granting special refugee status to Afrikaners.

In Beloofde Land, multi-award winner Rian van Heerden travels across South Africa and the USA to explore this complex and polarising issue from fresh, deeply human angles. Van Heerden was also behind the SAFTA-winning Sex in Afrikaans and Tiek Tok Boem!, hailed by IOL as one of the “most jaw-dropping documentaries of 2025.”

Guiding the chaos is none other than Smash Afrika, with his signature never-ending energy for every twist and turn.

BAZOZWA comes with new game mechanics, because with Biggie, the only constant is surprises. One of the big additions is the introduction of two new shows on Thursday and Friday, one being a sit-down with the evicted Housemate and the other being a roundup of all the week’s drama.

In March 2025, Big Brother Mzansi’s finale drew a record-breaking 3.8m live viewers across Mzansi Magic and Mzansi Wethu. 293m votes were cast, with “How to Vote on Big Brother” becoming Google’s #1 “How To” search trend for 2025 in South Africa.

kykNET (DStv Channel 144) | 8PM on Sunday, 18 January

Showmax Originals | Tuesdays from 20 January
It was more than 20 years ago that the world was introduced to the wonderfully bleak mockumentary world of The Office, created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. MetaCritic lists the British version as the best-reviewed comedy series of all time, while the American version won five Emmys, including Outstanding Comedy Series, and was the most-streamed show in the world in 2020 during COVID.

The 14th international adaptation, Die Kantoor stars 2025 Fleur du Cap winner Albert Pretorius (Niggies; Nêrens, Noord-Kaap) as Flip, the office manager at polony specialists Deluxe Processed Meats.

Inspired equally by Rassie Erasmus and Leon Schuster, Flip welcomes a documentary crew to record his rise to greatness… and his occasional pranks. He’s living his own Chasing The Sun. Everyone else is just trying to survive eight hours without throttling anyone.

The ensemble cast includes SAFTA winner Schalk Bezuidenhout (Kanarie, Hotel), screen legend Lida Botha (Die Kwiksilvers), Carl Beukes (Jozi, The Shakedown), Silwerskerm winner Ilse Oppelt (Oh Schuks I’m Gatvol, Fishy Fêshuns), Daniah de Villiers (Mia in Mia and the White Lion), Mehboob Bawa (Bhai in Bhai’s Cafe), former KFM presenter Sipumziwe Lucwaba, and newcomer Gert du Plessis.

HAZARDOUS HISTORY WITH HENRY WINKLER

HISTORY (DStv Channel 186) | 7:25PM on Thursday from 22 January

There was a time, not long ago, when we drank Coca-Cola that was laced with actual cocaine. We smoked everywhere, from airplanes to the doctor’s office. We stored our food in toxic refrigerators and flew down slides that ripped our skin off. We played (unknowingly) with radioactive toys and decorated our Christmas tree with ornaments made from asbestos. And ignorance was bliss.

Hosted by the iconic Henry Winkler (aka Gene Cousineau in Barry), each 60-minute episode of this nostalgia-drenched series tells the entertaining stories of the unchecked and unregulated places, people, products, practices, and pastimes from a forgotten era.

Fast-paced, informative, and slightly terrifying, the series explores the most careless, reckless and unsupervised tales of irresponsibility in our history.

As every parent’s worst nightmare begins to unfold, new questions lead to deep secrets, revealing cracks in the Irvines’ seemingly perfect world.

Adapted from Andrea Mara’s bestselling novel, All Her Fault stars Emmy winner Sarah Snook (Shiv Roy in Succession), who won Best Actress for the role at the 2026 Critics Choice Awards, where All Her Fault was also up for Best Limited Series, Supporting Actress (Sophia Lillis) and Supporting Actor (Michael Peña). Emmy nominees Dakota Fanning (Ripley) and Jake Lacy (The White Lotus) co-star.

In their five-star review, The Guardian calls All Her Fault “terrifying”, “an absolute pleasure to watch” and “fantastically well done.”

All Her Fault is also nominated for Best Female Actor (Snook) and Best Limited Series at the Golden Globe Awards this Sunday.
